As usual local Kyiv press seized on the most important issue: the unnamed promoters. MTV is licensing the brand name to Myira-TV, a company owned identified by MTV Ukraine general manager Gennady Borisov as “Western, apolitical and very powerful,” quoted by Kyiv Post. Borisov also told the local press that “all employees, contract and associated personnel have been instructed to avoid and refrain from any non-approved communication with press.”

MTV Ukraine, the networks’ 27th European channel, will compete with other local music TV channels, notably M1.

"We will try to maximize the percentage of videos and shows that will be made by Ukrainian talents while at the same time showing Ukrainian youth what has been done throughout the world," said Borisov, quoted by AFP. MTV has offered limited Ukrainian content produced by Enter Music and based on MTV Europe and MTV Russia content. The new all-Ukrainian channel is offering the usual local website component.

Unlike other Ukrainian music TV channels, MTV Ukraine will be ad supported, not charging musicians for placement.

When the new MTV Ukraine launches – suggested but not committed to be near the end of 2006 –  it may be the exclusive MTV music TV brand offered. Sources conflict on whether or not MTV Europe, MTV Germany and MTV Russia will continue to be offered in Ukraine after the launch of MTV Ukraine.

MTV Adria, serving Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia, was launched in September 2005.

Last year MTV Europe Foundation, Geneva-based International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Ukrainian rock band Okean Elzy collaborated on a concert tour to bring awareness to human trafficking in Ukraine.

"Ukraine is one of the strongest emerging markets in the world and we are very much looking forward to playing a significant role in the development and continued growth of the television, creative and music industries in this exciting country," said MTV Director for Emerging Markets Dean Possenniskie in a press release.

Just a month ago, Ireland-based Communicorp reached an agreement to purchase national radio network Nashe Radio and local Kyiv station Radio Apelsin.

In a likely unrelated incident, “malefactors” poured mercury somewhere inside the National Committee of TV and Radio Broadcasting (February 15), forcing evacuation, according to forUm.
