American TV Still Most Viewed Worldwide

With thousands of television programs illuminating home screens around the world and more local production than ever, the American shows still pull those big audiences. Even critics gathered at the 47th Monte-Carlo TV Festival gave top awards to mostly Anglo-American productions.

Based on 2006 audience ratings gathered from 48 countries by Eurodata TV Worldwide, CSI: Las Vegas draws the most viewers (79.9 million) around the world. Also in the drama TV series category top three were US productions CSI: Miami and Lost.

Desperate Housewives drew 70.9 million worldwide viewers to top the Comedy TV series category, which also included British hit Mr. Bean and the American serial Monk.

For telenovelas, that utterly American television genre, The Bold and the Beautiful (US) scored the most global viewers (24.7 million) against two Latin American entries,El Cuerpo des Deseo and Pasion de Gavilanes, both from Columbia.

Critics voting for the Golden Nymph Awards were more generous to non-American and non-Anglo television, though only slightly. Best drama production awards were given to Lost (US) and Life on Mars (UK). Denmark’s Sonja Richter won for best dramatic performance in Performances along with UK’s Andrew Lincoln for Afterlife.

ARTE and German public broadcaster Westdeutscher Rundfunk’s (WDR) Texas, Death by Injection (Ein Tod in Texas) won the International Grand Prize for Author’s Documentaries.
