Digital radio moves forward, receiver prices to fall
In the budget, too

Poland’s public radio broadcaster Polskie Radio will join the digital movement October 1st, said president Andrzej Siezieniewski, quoted by press.pl (August 1). Ten national channels and two local channels will be available on DAB+ multiplexes in Warsaw and Katowice.

“Today the cost of (receivers) in Western Europe is about €80 to €100,” he said. “As the digitization process unfolds, in three or four years, these prices should be around PLN 100 (about €25).” (See more on digital radio here)

Regulator KRRiT has allocated PLN 10 million, roughly €2.5 million, from the household license fee to the cost of digital radio expansion for Polskie Radio.

National stations up and down
Local stations up

Radio channels of Irish public broadcaster RTE slipped to 32.8% aggregate national market share in the latest JNLR/Ipsos MRBI audience estimates from 33.0% one year on. Main general interest channel Radio 1 continues to hold the top spot nationally with 23.1% market share among persons 15 years and older between 07h00 and 19h00 Monday through Friday. Youth-oriented RTE 2FM fell to 7.4% market share from 7.7% year on year and 3rd place nationally. Arts and classical music channel Lyric FM posted 1.7% national market share, down from 1.9% year on year. (See national audience trend chart here)

Commercial stations, thus, carried a 67.2% national market share. Full-service adult-contemporary national channel Today FM dropped to 9.0% market share from 9.9%, holding 2nd place in the national survey. Sister channel Newstalk maintained 4.6% market share. Both Today FM and Newstalk are owned by Communicorp, which also owns Dublin stations 98FM and Spin 103.8. Regional and local stations increased aggregate market share to 53.6% from 52.4%

And, unsurprisingly, Dublin is where the action is, the ratings battle among commercial broadcasters being won by contemporary rock station FM104, jumping to 14.1% market share from 12.2% one year on. RTE Radio 1 delivered 33.6% market share in Dublin, up from 32.3%. Soft A/C station Q102 posted 8.6% market share, up from 8.3%. UTV Radio owns both FM104 and Q102. (See Dublin audience trend chart here)

After several years of re-branding and re-branding and re-branding once leading station 98FM has fallen to 5th place among commercial stations, 5.9% market share from 7.7% year on year, in the Dublin survey. Spin 103.8 fell to 7.2% market share from 7.7%. National commercial channel Newstalk performs better in Dublin than in the national survey, posting 8.2% market share, up from 7.5% year on year. National channel Today FM dropped to 5.7% market share in Dublin from 6.3%. Rock oldies station Radio Nova, namesake of a yesteryear pirate station, climbed to 3.7% market share in Dublin from 3.1%.

Ireland’s biggest commercial broadcaster Communicorp, principally owned by Denis O’Brien, continues to bleed cash, reported the Irish Times (July 25), and heads have been rolling. 98FM chief executive Chris Doyle left in May ahead of Newstalk chief executive Frank Cronin in February and group chief executive Paddy Halpenny in January. A new CFO joined the radio company this month from the mobile telephone business.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
