“Scary” DAB may close commercial radio channel
“risk too great”

The only country that’s set a hard date for radio platform switch-over from FM to DAB is Norway. When first announced by the Culture Ministry in February 2011 the plan was for all national radio channels to vacate the FM band in 2017. Those commercial channels with licenses up for renewal before that date could only retain FM transmission through 2017 on agreement to take on DAB transmission.

ProSiebenSat/SBS-owned Radio Norge could be a casualty. “I must be honest to say that we jumped off because our owners believed the economic framework for being on (DAB) was bad,” said Radio Norge managing director Bernhard Steen, quoted by Kampaign (September 21). They thought the risk was too great and I know that did it.” Radio Norge ended collaboration with public broadcaster NRK and commercial channel P4 in Digitalradio Norge last April. “No guarantees are the biggest problem,” he added. “Forty million a year (NOK, about €5.4 million) for the next 20 years is scary to the German spreadsheet. It looked scary in the Norwegian spreadsheet, too.” (See more on media in Norway here)

ProSiebenSat/SBS has paid the NOK 12.8 million (€1.7 million) fee covering the Radio Norge concession through 2014. Steen confirmed that an inquiry about a refund had been made to the Culture Ministry.  Radio Norge’s market ranking has dropped from 3rd to 4th (8.2%) over the last year. Rumors that ProSiebenSat will exit the 150 Scandinavian radio channels in the SBS radio group persist. (JMH)

China extending European radio footprint
Programming and distribution

A company affiliated with China’s State broadcaster China Radio International acquired full control over Finnish classical music radio channel Rondo Classic. Global Broadcasting Media Consultation, operating as FutuVision Media, bought the outstanding equity in the station from Classicus Oy, which will continue to publish a music magazine and operate several web radio channels. The Finnish government has approved the ownership transfer, reported Verkkouutiset (September 20) with the Rondo Classic license extended through 2019. No financial terms were disclosed.

FutuVision Media is financed by China Radio International and produces audio content about China for global distribution. Global Broadcasting Media Consultation and FutuVision Media distribute radio programming often related to classical music to several European radio stations, including Klasszik Radio in Hungary, Classic FM Skopje in Macedonia, Radio TRI in Serbia, Radio Globale in Italy, Radio IMPULS in Armenia, Relax FM in Lithuania and Happy Radio in Greece. FutuVision Media operates from Tampere, Finland. (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
