BBC Albanian Service Launches Morning Radio Program
Michael Hedges November 1, 2005
News and current affairs program BBC Sot, meaning BBC Today, airs 0700-0900 CET, Monday through Friday on the BBC’s Tirana station 103.9 FM and several affiliates across the country. The program format contains regional and international news bulletins each 15 minutes and features on business, sports and culture. Listeners can participate in live in-studio debates via SMS messaging, telephone and email.
The big five western international broadcasters – BBC, Deutsche Welle, Radio France International, Radio Free Europe and the Voice of America – are present on FM or MW in Albania. The Voice of America produces a popular morning television program in Albanian simulcast on local radio. In addition to the Albanian language programs, BBC World Service also offers programs in English on the 103.9 FM channel.
Audiences for international broadcast channels are always higher in regions where the public feels insecure and Albania, like the rest of the region, has suffered, first through dictatorships and now an uncertain aftermath. VOA reports 20% of Albanians tune in at least once a week to its programs and the BBC reports 8%.
Privately owned radio stations are numerous, though the reported number in 2004 was 32, down from 54 in 2001. Newspaper and television groups own the most popular, like Top Albania Radio and Radio Koha. Others, primarily local stations, suffer financially, requiring support from international organizations.

If counting stations best measured a regions broadcasting health, radio in the western Balkans would be called strong and thriving. It is not.
