As Russian Federation authorities halt distribution of independent media with draconian rules and its forces target communications infrastructure in Ukraine with bombs and artillery, another shortwave radio project seeks to fill the void. Swedish telecom provider Bahnhof announced it is forming Radio Nord Stream 3 to broadcast news in Russian, said a company statement (March 10). UK public broadcaster BBC recently returned two shortwave frequencies to service directed at Ukraine and parts of the Russian Federation for English language broadcasts. A private group in the US has crowdfunded rebroadcasting of Radio Liberty, part of RFE/RL, via a shortwave frequency operated by Radio Miami International, a commercial broadcaster that brokers air time.
According to its website, BahnhofAB has a secure data center near Stockholm, Sweden inside a mountain that once was a civil defense facility. On top is a 15 meter mast once used by the Radio Sweden shortwave service. All that’s needed is a transmitter. In a plea on the website to “radio enthusiasts” the company asked for help. “We are an internet company and are unfamiliar with radio technology,” said the statement. “We therefore need your help!” (See more about international broadcasting here)
Most shortwave radio service to Europe vanished shortly after digital age provided a vastly less expensive alternative. Public broadcaster Sveriges Radio wound down the Radio Sweden international service in 2010. Some big international broadcasters still use shortwave to reach Africa and Asia. Those huge antenna farms have long since become housing developments. The energy-sucking transmitters falling into disrepair have been scrapped. More importantly, the engineers and technicians who once held that gear together are gone.
Listener interest in all-news radio channels generally rises and falls on major events. Average daily listening to Norwegian public radio all-news channel NRK Nyheter (News) has bubbled just below a 3% share, noted Radionytt no (March 9), according to Nielsen PPM data. For the week February 28 to March 6 the listening share rocketed to 6.7%, up from 5.5% the previous week.
"When major and serious incidents happen, the need for information is great in the population and the need has been covered for the radio listeners through the live broadcast that has been broadcast on the NRK Nyheter channel all day,” said NRK Nyheter manager Eva Midttun Leira. That major news event, obviously, continues to be war in Ukraine. All NRK channels - radio, TV and internet - are contributing to the joint broadcast. “That means the best sources, all correspondents and reporters can concentrate on delivering the best possible content somewhere.”
NRK has separate newsrooms for radio and TV based in Oslo; NRK Dagsnytt and NRK Dagsrevyen, respectively. A separate all-news radio channel - NRK Alltid Nyheter - is offered on national DAB+ networks. It claims to be the world’s first all-digital all-news radio channel. (See more about media in Norway here)
The increased audience has come with complications: trolls. The comment field on the NRK Nyheter Facebook page has been closed, reported Norwegian media news portal Medier24 (March 15). It seems Russian trolls complaining about Facebook banning Russian propaganda media turned to the NRK Nyheter page to express themselves.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
