Editor-in-Chief Appointed at Radio NetherlandsRadio Netherlands announces the appointment of Joop Daalmeijer as Editor-in-chief and director.Daalmeijer assumes responsibility for programming and news at the Dutch international broadcaster. He entered the television medium with VARA in 1972 and joined Veronica in 1985, becoming director in 1990. In 1998 he became coordinator of public television channel Netherlands 1 and in 2000 assumed the same position at Netherlands 2. The announcement was made Friday, 11 February. Joop Daalmeijer“Journalism as always been close to my heart,” said Daalmeijer in a statement released on his appointment. “I relish the challenge of managing the journalistic process within an innovative and international organization like Radio Netherlands. The organization reaches millions through the media of radio, TV and the Internet, thanks to its effective and innovative response to technological developments and changing needs. For me the prospect of reaching a global audience in eight languages on a range of media platforms represents a new dimension to the craft of journalism.” The announcement of Daalmeijer’s appointment follows by a month the appointment of Jan Hoek as Director General of Radio Netherlands. Hoek had been acting DG since early 2004 following the retirement of Lodewijk Bouwens. He joined Radio Netherlands in 1994 and became Director of Finance and Logistics in 1995.
Radio Netherlands is the well-regarded international multi-media arm of Netherlands public broadcasting. All Dutch public broadcasting, coordinated under the umbrella organization NOS, has undergone budgetary restructuring since the government imposed cuts from 2004. “We’re implementing a change of course in our strategic plan,” said Hoek on his appointment in January. “We’re doing far more co-productions with stations in Asia these days, specifically in Indonesia.” Radio Netherlands has been particularly active in assisting broadcasters in Indonesia, a former Dutch colony, after the December 26, 2004 tsunami. Several Radio Netherlands affiliate stations in Indonesia were destroyed. The network reports over 6000 affiliates world-wide. Hoek also serves as vice-chairman of the Digital Radio Mondial (DRM) consortium.
