It’s A Whole Digital World… Ad People Rejoice
great leap somewhere There should be no doubt. The digital revolution keeps marching on. Every part of the media sphere has joined the parade with drums and bugles. The advertising people are cheering. Even newer technologies coming. The disruption will be profound.

Public broadcaster rocked, literally, in new audience estimates
"dissatisfaction"

The big news in Italian radio broadcasting this past week was that the Tavolo Editori Radio (RadioTER) audience estimates were released. Specific results, not very dramatic, seem less significant than having the research completed. But the advertising people are happy.

Legacy hit music channel RTL 102.5 ranked first in audience reach, effectively unchanged one year on. It was followed by Radio Italia Solo Musica Italiana, slightly lower. RDS 100% Grandi Successi placed 3rd, followed by Radio 105, both slightly lower. Radio Deejay took 5th place, slightly higher. In the national survey the top five channels rarely change.

National radio channels of Italian public broadcaster RAI suffered in the recently released audience estimates. General interest channel Radio 1 held 8th place, slightly lower year on year. All of the RAI national channels reported lower reach. Mostly speech-based Radio 2 slipped to 10th place and classical music channel Radio 3 took 18th place, slightly higher in weekly reach. (See Italian national/regional leading radio reach and average quarter-hour trend charts here)

Radio director Roberto Sergio complained. “For some time RAI has expressed dissatisfaction with several methodological aspects of TER research", he offered to Primaonline (July 26). "So far, while clearly expressing our concerns, we have maintained a line of support to TER for pure team spirit and consistency with the project of a shared search. Today, in light of the inconsistencies between the various institutions involved and the constant difficulties of monitoring especially on weekends, we consider no longer sustainable research that does not honor the radio landscape in Italy". Rock music channels bounced up. Virgin Radio, 9th place, gained 6.7% in weekly reach one year on. Radiofreccia, sister channel to RTL 102.5, jumped 19.9% in weekly reach to 19th place nationally. All-news Radio News 24, still below the top 20, had the biggest gain, 30.4%.

Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
