ftm Radio Page - week ending July 5, 2019
Radio listening in Spain, generally, continues to fall, according to General Media Study (EGM), released last week. Since 2012 the share of people over 15 years listening has dropped from 61.9% to 57.0%. Internet usage, unsurprisingly, has risen sharply in the same time period; 46.7% to 79.4%. Demographic composition - age and gender - has not appreciably changed. More men than women listen, persons 35 to 55 years over-represented.
As usual, the top national channels held their positions. Cadena SER remains the highest rated radio channel with 30.9% audience share, up very slightly year on year. Second place Cadena Cope rose to 23.95 audience share from 22.1%. (See more about media in Spain here)
Last November Grupo Prisa rebranded hit oldies channel M80 as Los 40 Classic. Of course, DJs and jingles changed. And there was a big marketing push. It paid off. The new Los 40 Classic rose to 3.4% audience share from 2.7%, one year on, as M80. Los 40 Principales, the hit music channel, also jumped to 15.8% audience share - 3rd place - from 14.3%. Perhaps Spanish broadcasters will go all in for brand extensions. (See Spain national radio audience trend chart here)
Atresmedia might be looking for a new plan. All of its national channels were lower. General interest channel Onda Cero dropped to 12.0% audience share from 13.0% year on year. Pop-rock EuropaFM dropped to 6.9% from 8.0%, part of a long slide. Melodia FM fell to 1.1% audience share from 1.6%.
Public general interest channel Radio Nacional (RNE) was also slammed; dropping to 8.4% audience share from 10.1%, one year on. RNE Radio 3, the alt-contemporary music channel, was up slightly to 3.0% audience share. All-news Radio 5 was slightly lower at 1.3% audience share and Radio Clasica was unchanged at 1.1% audience share.
Results for regional public channels were mixed. Catalunya Radio was lower, 3.9% audience share from 4.3% year on year. Canal Fiesta (Andalucia) was also off, 2.5% audience share. Canal Sur Radio (Andalucia) and Radio Galega (Galicia) were both up; 1.9% and 1.4%, respectively.
The next EGM data will be released in November.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
