Nothing moves radio listeners more than high profile personalities. When those personalities move from channel to channel listeners start fiddling with their radios. Sometimes it works and sometimes not.

 

 

 

Broadcast regulator wants the money

Ukraine’s National Council on Television and Radio (Natsteleradio) decided Radio Melodia has had enough time to pay its license fee. The oldies music channel, heard in 15 cities including Kiev and Donetsk, has finally lost its licenses, reported RBD-Ukraine (December 8).

Radio Melodia’s owner, Onyx, hadn’t paid the license fee for 18 months, explained Natsteleradio Board Chairman Vladimir Manzhosov. ”This is the only way, as Alexander did with the Macedonian hords,” he said. “Any other decision of the National Council would be incomprehensible.” In recent audience surveys Radio Melodia ranked as high as 5th.

In September 2009 Natstelradio threatened to revoke the licenses but agreed to allow Onyx more time to pay up. The Radio Melodia licenses were renewed in December 2008 with the understanding that fees in arrears would be paid, reportedly more than US$ 4 million. Through those many months Natstelradio changed the method for calculating broadcasters license fees and Radio Melodia’s owners claimed “confusion.”

Media watchers in Ukraine noted that another commercial radio station, Kyiv-based TRK, also received several warnings about fee payments and never lost its licenses.

Natstelradio will soon advertise the frequencies for a new broadcaster. (JMH)

Secret of web radio success: It’s the DJs

Switzerland’s Radio 105 is something of a pioneer in web radio. It’s been on-the-air, figuratively, for years without benefit of an FM transmitter. Founder Giuseppe Scaglione spoke with Klein Report (December 9) about the secrets of success.

“The Radio 105 DJs are the same age as the Radio 105 listeners,” he explained. “The average age of our program crew is 24 years. Our employees are moving exactly where our target audience is moving.”

Asked about the measurement issue, Scaglione said provider Media Pulse hadn’t found a solution to measuring internet listening in five years. “This is totally unacceptable. It may be that it is technically challenging to measure…internet radio. But this is not our problem.”

Radio audience in Switzerland has been measured by the passive electronic system RadioControl for more than a decade. Switzerland was the first country to fully implement electronic measurement for radio.

Radio 105 released its own survey, also reported by Klein Report (December 9), which found 91% of those responding to an online questionnaire rate the station’s music as good or very good. (JMH)
