Local - small market - media continues to decline in some parts of the world under a variety of pressures. Local newspapers have disappeared. And so have local radio stations. There is seldom sufficient interest to keep them afloat.
The center-right Fianna Fáil political party last month resurrected a legislative proposal to share public broadcasting license fee revenues with Irish local radio stations. The measure received debate in the lower house of parliament and would provide up to €250,000 annually to local and regional radio broadcasters to support news and public affairs programming. Funding would come from improving license fee revenues. A bill to authorize the measure could see a parliamentary vote in September.
"Local stations have a contractual obligation to fulfil the 20% public service obligation to provide new and current affairs programming, but they are finding it increasingly difficult to find the funds to maintain a full service newsroom,” said Fianna Fáil communications spokesperson Timmy Dooley, quoted by the Irish Examiner (February 27). Independent local radio (ILR) is a license class and includes 34 commercial radio stations, some in metropolitan areas. In addition there are 20 non-commercial community stations.
Separately, regulator Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) announced the award of €630,000 to radio broadcasters - public, ILR and community - for 90 program grants under the Sound & Vision 3 Broadcasting Funding Scheme, noted RadioToday Ireland (March 18). Television broadcasters received €5.1 million for 29 projects.
Irish radio broadcasters are also asking for relief from fees assessed to support the BAI.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
