Metro Expands in The Netherlands, Poland

Metro, the international tabloid newspaper group that gives its newspapers away to commuters, says it is expanding its operations in The Netherlands and in Poland.

In The Netherlands, a new edition was launched in Rotterdam for distribution six days a week. Previously, Metro distributed its national edition in Rotterdam. The Rotterdam edition will feature local news and have its own local front page.

In Poland, Metro is expanding its operation from a twice a week circulation to five days a week and distribution is extended to an additional five cities. Targeting 7 million Polish city dwellers, copies of Metropolitan will be handed out in office buildings, college campuses and to commuters in automobiles.

Metro is the largest circulation newspaper in Warsaw and with its expansion it becomes the third largest daily newspaper in Poland.

The publisher commissioned a TNS Gallup study of 24,000 18-34 year olds finding one in four pick up a Metro-like newspaper each day.

The Swedish-based Metro International publishes 5.5 million daily copies in 16 countries.
