Hot Topic - Media in the Netherlands
Media sector response to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic has been varied widely. Most all media organizations have become abundantly conscious of the well-being of their employees, moving many workers from offices to homes whenever possible. Obvious to anybody paying attention, news organizations have centered reporting on this subject, often to the detriment of everything else. TV broadcasters and their streaming rivals are accommodating viewers new habits. Some publishers have even dropped paywalls.
Chasing the digital dividend comes at no small expense. Costs always seem to rise with each new exciting advance in technology. For years, decades even, the chorus repeats “the future is digital,” arrival expected any day now. As with any investment there’s anxiety. And the best cure for anxiety, say the doctors, is more money.
Big media houses are finishing 2013 with a sense of renewal. The financial picture for most isn’t getting much better but it isn’t getting much worse. Digital transition is a foregone conclusion but the end result remains hazy. Possibilities, once so numerous, all lead one direction.
Arts, culture and public broadcasting are always popular targets when governments start trimming budgets. And newly formed governments aren’t wasting any time. This year trimming has become slashing. Next year will bring a new plan.
The Dutch have a special relationship with radio. Dutch broadcasters love their hit music stations and chart shows. Inside each is still a little bit of the pirate.
Always creative, Dutch broadcasters have serious fans. And, in times of need, turning to the fans for financial support could be one way to make it through the day. One broadcaster is doing just that and hopes to raise a few million in short order.
Two years ago publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad sparked violence and rage. In the name of freedom of speech the Danish government took the side of the publishers. Nobody wants the story repeated.
