English Language Radio Comes to Georgia

Georgia holds a rich and distinctive culture quite unique in the world. The geography is breath-taking. The people are warm, friendly and instinctively wise. The language is incomprehensible.

And, Georgia is struggling to come into its’ own after long domination by northern neighbors. (WAIT! This story is about the country Georgia famous for wine, not the southern US state famous for Georgia Tech football.)

An initiative announced this week is bringing an English language radio station to Georgia’s capital Tbilisi. American public radio network NPR and Dutch public network NOS will provide news and information programming. Local programming will be produced by students of the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA) as the station is known as Radio GIPA.

The English-speaking community in Tbilisi has grown significantly in recent years as international organizations increase their presence.

NPR produces widely respected programming for American public broadcasters. The network recently opened its first European radio station in Berlin.

The Polish Embassy in Tbilisi provided a grant to Radio GIPA for equipment and the US government provided advisors. - Michael Hedges April 18, 2007
