France 24 Almost Ready

On December 6th the world will see the first output from the French governments’ television network France 24. It will be available on the internet. Like all other government sponsored international media, France 24 targets “opinion leaders.”

Devined by French President Jacques Chirac to counter the Anglo-Saxon view point from BBC World and CNN International France 24 will “communicate French values worldwide.” However difficult to define, all journalists working for the channel are required to sign an agreement supporting the channels “principles.”

English mother-tongue journalists, says the channels’ press kit, need special training to communicate French values.

French journalists continue to criticize government expenditures of France 24 while newspapers like Libération face financial extinction. - Michael Hedges November 3, 2006
