Radio listening spirals lower, podcasts and streaming rise
"it's the women"

Radio broadcasters have faced challenges before. About once a generation something comes along to disrupt. Sometimes it’s technology; remember TV? Sometimes it’s content; remember disco? Sometimes it’s regulation; remember quotas?

Norway is seen - by some - as the canary in the mineshaft for the latest disruption, digital switchover. Switching off much of FM distribution in favor of the DAB+ platform at the end of 2017 was certainly a disruption for many radio listeners. A national survey conducted by Statistics Norway shows overall radio listening dropping to just 50% of the population in 2018, down from 54% year on year, reported media portal radionytt.no (April 30). Eye-catching, though, is the drop from 71% listening every day in 1991. (See more about media in Norway here)

“This is both the lowest proportion of radio listeners and the lowest listening time we have measured over the years (since) the survey has been conducted,” said Statistics Norway researcher Emma Castillo Schiro to journalisten.no (April 27). The Norwegian Media Monitor is conducted annually and separately from the PPM radio listening estimates.

Where relevant data is available, it is clear that something is happening with radio listening elsewhere. In both France and the UK, total listening shares have fallen in recent months. The trend appears to have more to do with consumers than either content or, purely, technologies.

According to the Norwegian Media Monitor, more people (54%) are listening to audio other than radio. This means podcasts, streaming and audio on-demand. Also, “it’s the women and the children that are turning away from traditional radio,” noted radionytt.no, “while listening among men are at almost the same level in 2018, compared to 2017.”
