Like the weather, everybody talks about change. Media organizations are particularly susceptible to the idea. It makes for great meetings. After that, reality is very stormy.
Broadcaster ends rights fee holdout
Always a negotiation
Radio streams from Norwegian Public Broadcasting (NRK) will return to the web after a deal was secured with music rights fee collector IFPI Norway. For a year NRK radio programs have been absent from the web as negotiations stalled. The breakthrough came, apparently, when music rights compensation for radio and TV was separated.
“Both parties came to a sum that we are happy with,” said NRK music rights manager Per Ole Hagen to Kampanje (January 8), though no sum has been mentioned. “We would, of course, wish it were a little cheaper, while IFPI wish they were getting a little more. So it is always a negotiation.” (See more on intellectual property rights here)
IFPI Norway reportedly demanded a 360% immediate increase in radio and TV rights fees and 800% within a year. The new agreement takes effect in March and allows an NRK radio program to remain accessible on the web for six months. The previous agreement allowed only one month web access. Podcasts are not included in the current agreement, which runs through the end of 2014. (See more on media in Norway here)
Negotiations are continuing between NRK and IFPI Norway for television music rights. (JMH)
