Out with the old; format, staff and all
Happy New Year!

Ah, that New Year’s resolution: out with the old, in with the new. Basel, Switzerland’s Radio Basel went quiet this week (January 10) only to be reborn as Energy Basel on Friday the 13th. Owner Karlheinz Kögel has taken on new minority partners, media house Ringier and NRJ Group. When the “energy” is turned on, gone will be the former adult music format, replaced with the basic NRJ youth-oriented hits. The entire staff has been replaced.

Energy Basel will be the third “Energy” branded radio station in the Swiss-German speaking part of Switzerland, after Energy Zürich and Energy Bern. In the French-speaking part, NRJ Group wholly owns stations in Lausanne and Geneva.

Local critics aren’t happy with the ease which license content requirement changes were allowed by regulator OFCOM. Community station Radio X manager Thomas Jenny referred to it as the arrival of the “European McDonalds Radio,” quoted by Aargauer Zeitung (January 11). (JMH)

Athens radio station occupied
“youngsters” with a message

Athens radio station Flash 96 were host to about 30 uninvited guests Tuesday (January 10). Arriving somewhere between 10h30 and 11h00 the group, sympathetic to the anarchist Revolutionary Struggle, took over a studio and delivered a list of complaints on-the-air for more than a hour.

Police were called and after some negotiation the “youngsters,” as described by naftemporiki.gr (January 11), left the premises about four hours later. Twenty were promptly arrested. (JMH)
