More Silly Media Tricks
microphone Media watchers can wail and moan all day and all night. Once a political strongman decides to slam the door on independent media there’s little anyone can do. It’s “regrettable.”

Big radio switch rocks landscape
NRJ changes operating agreement

Commercial radio in Sweden will change dramatically as NRJ Group switches its alliance from Modern Times Group (MTG) to SBS Radio. Within days of announcement (December 16) the brand shuffle has become apparent.

The Rix FM and Bandit brands owned by MTG will switch to the Mix Megapol and Rock Classic brands owned by SBS Radio on most of the 20 local radio licenses owned by NRJ Group in Sweden. The NRJ brand will continue on FM in Stockholm, Gotherburg and Malmo. The agreement with SBS Radio takes effect January 1st, 2013.

NRJ Group was an early investor in Swedish commercial radio but was eclipsed by MTG and SBS stations as rules changed to allow quasi-national networks. And, too, the international strategy at NRJ Group changed in most countries outside France from operator to licensee.

MTG announced (December 16) the appointment of a new CEO for radio, Robert Kviby, replacing Anna Berggren. (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
