New Radio Channel “Couldn’t Be Better”
radio24syv Private sector media operators have long called for reducing public broadcasting’s output. The overwhelming might of legacy, publicly funded radio and television stifles competition, they say. Politicians, sympathetic for various reasons, have been reluctant to make changes, fearing voter backlash. One of the first newly privatized radio channels has signed on to both criticism and praise.

Multiplatform radio for the youngest listeners
No Gaga

Spain’s first radio channel for children, aptly named Babyradio, has been making cheerful sounds for a month, reports Europapress (November 5). So far, the internet-based multiplatform radio for children up to age six has attracted 50,000 listeners, 20,000 website visits and 100,000 “friends” and such on social network sites.  Founded by three experienced but youthful media entrepreneurs, Babyradio is special in that all content is “unique in the world.” (See more on media in Spain here)

Children’s media is quite common on a variety of platforms. There are “baby radio” channels on the Web in the UK, Poland and Greece. German public broadcaster MDR is contemplating a radio channel for the young ones. Children’s TV channels spring up periodically, often attracting questions about ads targeting kids. The target, of course, isn’t necessarily the little people; it’s the parents. (See more on children and media here)

Babyradio in Spain broadcasts 24/7, has its own blog (www.babyradio.es) and smartphone apps.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
