When a private equity firm invests in a company a clock, genetic certainly, starts ticking. Nobody hears it at first, the sound drowned out by plaudits and arriving cash. The volume increases gradually until nothing else can be heard.
African broadcaster causality of Libya conflict
Frozen funds
Pan African satellite broadcaster Africa No.1 found itself off the air. Satellite provider Eutelsat shut off the transponder for non-payment of fees, reported the Gabonese newspaper Union (April 27). The broadcaster owes Eutelsat between €150,000 and €300,000, depending on the source, and has an outstanding debt of about €900,000.
Africa No.1 is majority owned by Libyan state broadcaster Libyan Jamahiriya Broadcasting (52%) and minority owned by the Gabonese government (30%) and private investors. Funds from the Libyan-African Investment Portfolio have been frozen by the current conflict, said broadcaster spokesperson Ali Abubaker. Salaries for about 70 employees stopped at the end of March.
Africa No.1 claims 20 million listeners in Africa. The channel is also heard on an FM frequency in Paris, which apparently has not been affected. Africa No. 1 celebrated its 30th anniversary last February. The Libyan government acquired the stake in Africa No.1 in 2008 on the exit of the French and Japanese governments. (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
