ftm Radio Page - April 15, 2011
For many radio stations, the most important branding element is the morning show. It’s all about the numbers; more radio listening takes place in the morning. Stations, typically, invest more between six and nine in the morning than any other day-part, sometimes more than the rest of the day. Even stations branded as all-music will add services and a stronger host, so important is the morning slot.
Skyrock rocked!!
Shuffle and punt
A new owner for French national music channel Skyrock appears imminent, reports several French media sources (April 13). Disagreements between founder and company president Pierre Bellanger and principal shareholder Axa Private Equity are, naturally, about “increasing shareholder value.” In short: Axa Private Equity wants to cash-out, which is what all private equity firms do eventually.
Company shareholders, meaning Axa Private Equity, appointed former NextRadioTV deputy director-general Marc Laufer president (April 12), relegating M. Bellanger to a ceremonial post. Station DJs took to the airwaves (April 13) to protest with employees preventing M. Laufer from entering his new office. Reports indicate M. Laufer’s appointed task in shedding 50 of the company’s 200 employees. (See more on media in France here)
Investment bank Messier Maris and Associates has been named to “evaluate.” Jean-Marie Messier is the former CEO of Vivendi Universal. French media wags speculate NextRadioTV, TF1 or Bolloré may bid for Skyrock, which will be the first ownership transfer of a French national radio channel since Alain Weill formed NextRadioTV by acquiring RMC in 2000. The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
