Landslide Numbers In Audience Survey
panic With baited breath, broadcasters await survey results, that quarterly panic. Some, typically, are relieved when the day comes and others are relieved from their jobs. Occasionally there’s euphoria. Occasionally there are wobbly feet.

Copyright rules nip internet radio
Great demand

Tough copyright rules in Germany are preventing new generation internet radio services from the market place, writes media researcher Klaus Goldhammer in kress.de (May 12). He notes the increasing number of internet radio stations in Germany, about 2,700 according the BLM-Webradiominitor. “The potential for online radio and music services is probably even greater,” he said.

Internet radio in Germany lags the United States, says Goldhammer, because the next generation services, notably Pandora, aren’t available. “Pandora provides customizable music streams and leads by a clear margin the ranking of downloadable iPhone apps in the United States. This shows what great demand there is for customizable web radio services. That Pandora (along with other services such as Spotify) are not available in Germany is due to so far unresolved copyright issues.”

He also cited a 2010 Edison research study showing prime-time morning radio usage among 12 to 24 year olds in the US dropping from 74% in 2000 to 41% in 2010. During the same period internet radio usage in the US has tripled. (JMH)

Digital radio not ready for several years, report
“economic conditions not met”

Introducing digital radio in France should be put off another “two or three years,” indicated a report commissioned by French Prime Minister François Fillon and released this week (May 11). The report’s author, David Kessler, observed that “the economic conditions have not been met for a large-scale introduction of digital radio” and further “the government cannot afford to fund the entire network.” Kessler’s report was a year in the making.

Owners of the big French national radio channels, he said, have “maintained, even strengthened, their opposition to  (digital radio) saying they cannot endure (transmission) costs (because of) uncertain prospects for new revenue.” Smaller, local and community broadcasters are enthusiastic supporters of digital radio introduction in France. (See more on digital radio here)

“The confrontation between supporters and opponents of (digital radio) has created intense debate for several years now,” he continued. “The arguments of skeptics weighed more at the moment and have even gained ground, so (digital radio) is deadlocked.”

M. Kessler proposes a digital radio experiment in Brittany, which, he said, wouldn’t cost much, and forming a digital radio observatory within media regulator CSA to watch developments, including internet radio. (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
