Online radio portals attract listeners, investors
Time will tell

Online portals for radio are proving attractive for people glued to their laptops and smartphones. Figures released in the UK for the two-month old UK Radioplayer shows 5.7 million folks – unique visitors, technically – accessed the portal in the four weeks beginning April 25th, reported The Guardian (June 1) and Radio Today (May 31).

The Radioplayer is a joint venture of the BBC and UK commercial broadcasters. At present, 238 national and local radio channels are available, all based in the UK. The plan is to bring as many of the roughly 400 UK radio channels to the portal eventually. Radio measurement service RAJAR reported 3.1% of all UK radio listening coming from the internet. Listener interest in internet radio varies around the globe but growth in streaming radio and music portals is simply astounding. In the US internet radio portals are accessed by more than one-third of all internet users, reported eMarketer (June 1), which projects doubling to 68% by 2015. “The growing popularity of Pandora, coupled with the expected arrival of services like Spotify in the U.S., could tip the balance sooner rather than later,” said the report.

Pandora Media is readying its IPO, underwritten by USD 40 million by Citigroup Global Markets, JPMorgan Securities, and Morgan Stanley. Pandora allows users to create custom music services rather than streaming existing radio channels. US radio broadcasters generally see Pandora and Spotify as a threats bigger than satellite radio.
