Internet radio receiver market grows
All tastes and budgets

Noting the growing interest in internet radio shown at the recently ended IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin, market researcher GfK says the market “now caters for all tastes and budgets. Looking at the consumer electronics market in six countries, sales of devices with internet radio capacity increased 60%, comparing January through July figures compared with the same period in 2010. Sales in Germany were the highest and the UK lowest. (See more on internet radio here)

More than half the internet radio enabled devices were sold as part of home audio systems. On the whole, the GfK report (September 22) says the rise in consumer interest in internet radio is directly related to the rise in smartphone use and the popularity of internet radio aggregators like Spotify. Local broadcasters blast DAB plan
Wait, wait, don’t tell me

A group of local UK commercial radio broadcasters has called regulator OFCOM’s DAB multiplex organization consultation “an academic exercise” offering “no practical strategy.” The 15 owners and managers oppose the somewhat vague plans to shut-off FM broadcasting. “DAB is clearly not suitable – in terms of transmission costs, robust coverage or consumer take-up – to become the primary broadcast platform for genuinely local radio in many areas,” said their submission to the official consultation.

The DAB platform is meant to eventually replace FM broadcasting in the UK. Only in Norway has a date for FM switch-off been set and that left the FM band open to local radio broadcasting. DAB supporters have long touted the platform’s benefits, for so long it’s hard to remember exactly what. Audio quality and more channels come to mind. Critics consider DAB a cure for which there’s not illness. (See more on digital radio here)

In a separate, related statement UKRD, owner of several local commercial FM stations, called DAB “a car crash waiting to happen.” (JMH)

Analogue radio to exist for a long time
Digital “will not stop”

“Analogue broadcasting will continue to exist for a long time simply because every home already has a receiver and people are accustomed to listening to their favorite radio station on the FM band,” said ProfMedia Broadcasting president Yuri Kostin to a press conference in Moscow (September 13) ahead of the Russian Radio Academy’s conference on digital radio, quoted by onair.ru. “It’s just convenient.”

The digital revolution, he added, “will not stop.”  But listeners will need to learn new habits. “Everyone should understand that people will not just listen to the radio but pause, rewind, fast-forward, find out who is currently singing, buy a track at the same time or send it to a friend.”

ProfMedia Broadcasting owns and operates four radio channels, including Avtoradio and Humor FM. (See more on media in Russia here)

The “Radio In The Digital Environment” conference will be held in Moscow September 22nd. (JMH)

Lots of people listening to internet radio
Prime time is the nighttime

Sure as night follows day, radio listening via the Web is growing. And just as sure as radio broadcasters follow the advertisers, research shows there’s a market. Three-quarters of (a) “regular” listeners to private, commercial radio, (b) between 14 and 59 years, (c) in Hamburg, Germany, (d) with internet access listen to radio over the internet. Compelling, no?

The panel study conducted in June and July by TNS Emnid for Radio Marketing Service (RMS), the private, commercial radio sales-house, showed that within that group five out of six 14 to 29 year old males were “heavy users” of Web radio, according to the RMS presser (September 15). (See more on internet radio here)

We radio users, according to the study, listen most in the early evening, between 18h00 and 21h00. (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
