Broadcasters set world records
no business like show business

Radio broadcasters have been setting world records this year at a furious pace. Maybe it’s something in the air, so to speak.

Just look at the last few weeks:

On November 24th, BFBS afternoon show host Richard Hatch went under – water, that is – for four hours, 43 minutes and 54 seconds to break the previously held record for broadcasting live at least five meters under water. BFBS broadcasts to British forces around the world. The “pool party” was a charity fund raising event. (See the BFBS presser here)

Berlin radio station Kiss FM’s morning duo Nora und Tolga broke the official Guinness record November 18th for the longest non-stop live DJ show by staying awake, alert and talking for 73 hours. The previous record was a mere 52 hours…wimps.

Arguably the best radio world record setting goes to Ireland public radio channel Radio 1 for the largest gathering of people dressed as leprechauns on November 16th. Seriously. “It's great to bring the record home to Ireland; the spiritual home of leprechauns," said show host Derek Mooney after lining up 250 people dressed appropriately. The previous record was set by US TV show host Jay Leno on St. Patrick’s Day.

Earlier this year, Romanian National Radio sports broadcaster Ilie Dobre set a world record, recognized by the World Records Academy, for phonating the word “goal” for 42 seconds without taking a breath. The record for celebrating a goal was set during his broadcast of a match in July and recognized in September. The previous record was but 19 seconds set by a broadcaster in Argentina. (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
