Top national channel falls
They’re up. They’re down.

Historically top ranked RTL was knocked off its perch in the September-October Médiamétrie radio audience survey of the Il-de-France (IDF - greater Paris) region. The national general interest channel tumbled to 10.2% market share from 12.3% one year on. Who’d have thought? In living memory (nearly 10 years) RTL has been number 1 in the IDF region.

Solidly trouncing RTL was public radio news-talk channel France Inter, up to 11.2% market share from 8.9%. General interest national channel Europe 1 dropped to 8.3% from 10.6% year on year tying news-talk channel RMC for 3rd place overall, a record for RMC, up from 6.8% market share. Fifth place went to another speech-based national channel, public radio France Info, up to 5.6% from 4.3% one year on. The top five ranked channels in the IDF region are speech-based. (See Médiamétrie IDF survey chart here)

Rap and hip-hop national channel Skyrock placed 6th with 5.3% market share, up from 4.0% one year on. Skyrock’s major competitor for the under 30 audience, NRJ, was also up, placing 7th, with 4.2% market share, up from 3.4%. Lest we think this measurement period was all about news-talk on one side and hot hits on the other, Radio Classique, classical music channel owned by LVMH, posted 3.6% market share, up from 3.1%.

National music channels targeting middle demographics fared poorly. Oldies channel Nostalgie dropped to 3.4% from 3.7% and adult contemporary Cherie FM dropped dramatically to 2.0% from 3.6% market share one year on.

Local radio stations Radio Latina, Radio Nova, Tropiques FM and T.S.F. all posted gains. (JMH)

Broadcasters remember campaign promise
“problem of interpretation”

After a landslide victory in Spain’s recent elections, Prime Minister-elect Mariano Rajoy has a mandate for bold change. Certainly, much of his attention is on all things financial. But the country’s radio broadcasters want to remind him of a campaign promise.

Private sector radio broadcasters and the National Professional Football League (Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional - LFP) have this ugly dispute, which has kept sports reporters off the pitch this season. The football people want a fee, like the one they charge television broadcasters. Current law in Spain is somewhat ambiguous, allowing the football teams to charge television broadcasters a stadium fee but not mentioning radio broadcasters. (See more on sports and media here)

Ahead of the elections Sr. Rajoy indicated support for the radio broadcasters position – no fee – and amending the law to make that clear. His spokesperson, Esteban Gonzalez Pons, said amending Spain’s audiovisual Law would “solve the problem of interpretation,” reported El Mundo (November 21).

”This is one of the issues that can be resolved as soon as possible to end the present state of tension between radio and football,” said Spanish Commercial Broadcasters Association (AERC) secretary general Alfonso Ruiz de AssÌn, who remembers everything. (JMH)

Longest morning show ever
One for the record book

Publicity stunts by radio morning shows can be daring, artful and even crazy. It’s youthful DJs who pull these off and not, generally, those with more sense.

The morning team at Berlin’s Kiss FM – Nora (age 27) and Tolga (age 23) – talked their way into the Guinness World Record book (November 18) by staying awake and on-the-air for 73 hours. During the marathon morning show the duo were aided by entertainment industry guests as well as paramedics. Four webcams kept fans attention.

They were allowed a five-minute break per hour – change clothes, no shower, brush teeth – then back to work. The Guinness Record book people have rules for everything. Officially, it’s a record for “Longest Marathon for a Radio Music Show DJ-Team”.

In March BBC Radio 1 morning DJ Chris Moyles (age 37) set a record in the same category at 52 hours as a fund-raiser for Comic Relief. Some people say he’s too old for this sort of thing. (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
