Local broadcasters want FM, big broadcasters quit
Mildly confusing

When the Norwegian Association of Local Radio (Norsk Lokalradioforbund) met recently incoming chairman Svein Larsen, owner of Radio Metro, took the position that “local radio must continue on FM.” Radio broadcasters in Norway are divided – big versus not so big – on the impending FM switch-off favoring the DAB digital platform. Local broadcaster’s hard position led SBS Discovery Radio CEO Lasse Kokvik to withdraw from the organization.

“It was clear after the meeting…that there is a conflict of interest,” said Mr. Kokvik to reported kampanje.com (May 15). “It would be messy for us to be part of the local radio association, which has a different strategy. SBS Radio owns Radio 1, The Voice and Radio Norge in Norway, all with national or regional footprints and, as such, destined to migrate from FM to Dab platforms in 2017. A year ago Discovery Communications completed its acquisition of the ProSiebenSat1.Media Group radio and television assets in Scandinavia known as SBS Nordic.

“This means the two major commercial players with national licenses are out,” said Mr. Larsen, “but all the rest in the organization are Norwegian-owned companies with local licenses. Regarding what will happen with the government, I must simply say it can be a big advantage.” Modern Times Group (MTG) withdrew from the association last year. (See more on digital radio here)

“We’re preparing for the extinction of the FM band in 2017 and a national strategy for that,” said Mr. Kokvik. “Given the significant investments we’ve made in digitizing, to consider FM as an alternative network would be mildly confusing.”
