Consolidation is an appealing business strategy. All those economies of scale bring joy to investor’s hearts, wherever that might be. After the digital dividend brought a decade of experimentation and fragmentation, media organizations are pulling back to leading brands. Market shares might be rising but consumers are still going digital, looking and listening for something new. It’s a quandary.
Radio surveys must go on
Changes next time
Amidst considerable tension and turmoil, some things must go on. And so, Ukraine’s Radio Committee released this week the January through March radio audience estimates. The top three channels – Hit FM, Russian Radio and Radio Chanson – were unchanged from the last several quarterly surveys of listening in cities over 50,000 population. According to the estimates, 83% of the survey population are weekly radio listeners.
The rest of the top ten were (in order): Retro Radio, Lux FM, Nashe Radio, Avtoradio, Kiss FM, Melodia and Radio ROKS. (See more about media in Ukraine here)
The January-March survey includes radio listening in the Crimea. The next quarterly survey will not. “We hope the market will treat this with understanding,” said the Radio Committee press release (May 19). The radio audience survey is conducted by GfK Ukraine.
Dutch DJs continue sleepless streak
All day and all of the night
Being locked in a radio studio for more than a week “was so cool,” said Dutch radio DJ Giel Beelen, quoted by mediamagazine.nl (May 20). The 3FM DJ set a world record, so they say, for being – mostly – on the air for 191 hours. “It was the best radio moment of my life,” he said.
Many moments, actually, some he remembers. “I wouldn’t call it hallucinating but I don’t remember was I was broadcasting.” This particular moment coincided with DJ Beelen’s tenth anniversary at the station.
A station spokesperson said he was “medically quiet right.” He was allowed “power naps” of 2 or 3 hours each day. Other DJs were on stand-by, just in case.
Two weeks ago Belgian-Flemish DJ Lennart Creël set this particular record with 190 hours on Club FM. The previous record was set by MNM DJ Peter van de Veire in 2012.
Monthly rolling average NLO audience estimates for March-April showed Radio 538 leading with 11.1% market share, slightly up month to month, followed by Sky Radio with 10.2%, slightly down, and 3FM in third place with 9.8%, slightly down.
Big stations get bigger on money and things
Who wants the news?
Portugal’s two biggest national radio channels are just getting bigger, according to recently released Bareme Ràdio Marktest audience share estimates. Other channels, mostly, gave up a few share points.
Radio Comercial held the top spot with 22.4% audience share for the January through April period, up from 20.1% year on year. The pop music channel, owned by MediaCapital/Prisa, boasts of more Portuguese footballers on the air than rivals. Radio Comercial is broadly challenged by RFM, the adult contemporary channel of R/Com, still number two nationally but up to 22.0% audience share from 16.6%.
Radio Comercial and RFM promote heavily with money and things. Radio Comercial’s current promotion is a somewhat complicated “reverse auction” for a Mercedes Benz from morning show co-host and program director Pedro Ribeiro. Entries are by phone only, normal call rates apply, and the lowest bid wins, right, so long as it’s unduplicated. RFM’s spring promotion was a bit more straight-forward: call in to win cash. General interest channel Radio Renascença, R/Com’s flagship, placed 3rd, 8.5% audience share down from 10.0% one year on. R/Com’s pop dance channel Mega Hits rose to 3.9% audience share from 2.7% while oldies channel Radio Sim fell to 2.2% audience share from 2.7%.
Media Capital’s pop oldies channel M80 was reasonably stable at 5th place and 6.0% audience share. Sister channel Cidade (City) FM took a beating, falling to 3.1% audience share from 4.3% year on year. Relatively new jazz/blues easy listening channel Smooth FM moved to 0.9% audience from 0.5%. All-request Vodafone FM was a no-show.
All-news channel TSF continues to fade, falling to 3.6% market share from 4.5% year on year. Mostly news and talk public channel RTP Antena 1 held 4th place nationally but dropped to 6.8% audience share from 8.0%. Youth-oriented alternative music channel Antena 3 dropped to 2.8% audience share from 4.0%.
