Early Wednesday morning (July 13) an explosion rocked the building housing Athens radio station Real FM. Damage to the premises in the Maroussi suburb of Athens, which include newspaper Real News, was extensive. A station sound engineer was evacuated and treated for smoke inhalation. Fire inspectors found remnants of three gas canisters strapped together on an external stairwell. The station’s transmitter and tower site was damaged by a fire earlier in the evening.
“They are burning us! They are trying to shut us down!,” wrote Real Group owner Nikos Chatzinikolaou on social media after the explosion. Company security cameras showed two persons placing the canisters. Police investigators suspect the firebombing is related to “the request for the release of a well-known, anarchist prisoner,” reported news outlet ProtoThema (July 14). An “anti-authoritarian group” may be involved. A parts of a timing device and a fourth canister were recovered the following day. (See more about media in Greece here)
Real FM is an all-news radio channel. On its website, Real Group promised an “extensive report” this Sunday (July 17) to “bring to light all the dimensions of the criminal attack.” Real FM was founded in 2007.
"Anyone who thinks that in this will harm the freedom of the press is seriously mistaken,” said government spokesperson Yannis Oikonomou, quoted by Skai News (July 13). Greek politicians and political parties swiftly condemned the firebombing. “This attack is really shocking,” said European Commission Vice President for Values and Transparency Vera Jourova, quoted by VOA News (July 14).
The challenges facing audience measurement services are, at once, complex and mundane. Every few months media buyers and broadcasters demand new wrinkles in data, methodologies or presentation. Sometime all at once, just to make things different. This drives media watchers to distraction, which is the idea.
German measurement coordinator AG.MA released this past week (July 13) its MA 2022 Audio II dataset. Once it simply estimated listening for radio. That wasn’t good enough so the much broader audio realm was added, sort of. This added data for internet and mobile streaming. Of course, technical methods for collecting radio audience and streaming users differed so something of a compromise was reached, then reached again. (See more about media measurement here)
All of this - not to forget the Covid-19 measurement pause - meant comparative trend data has been unavailable for several years. Broadcasters, in particular, and media buyers were OK with that. Rankings in each German Federal State offered simple press releases; trends far more complicated.
For the first time with reasonably compatible methodology in years the most recent MA 2022 Audio II dataset can be compared with the previous survey, MA 2022 Audio I, dataset collected between September 2021 and March 2022. Top line results show average week usage for the German-speaking population over 14 years has not changed much; 94.1% reach from 93.8%. Total time spent listening is also, roughly, unchanged; 249 average daily minutes from 254 minutes. (See more about media in Germany here)
Listening to “classic” radio platforms generally conformed to this consistency. The digital radio DAB+ platform showed a bit of growth across the two periods. German broadcasters (and others) have flooded the DAB+ field and that is reflected by 27.0% aggregate weekly reach, up from 24.5% in the previous period. Most DAB+ listening is from persons 30 to 59 years; Millennials. Streaming, by contrast, has gone to the Zoomers, persons 14 to 29 years; 43.9% reach from 37.2% in the previous period.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
