Broadcasting and cultural capital
Greater proximity
The Mediterranean port Marseille, second biggest city in France, has been designated this year’s European Capital of Culture, share the designation with Kosice in Slovakia. Considerable investment, reportedly €7 billion, is going into a bit of rebranding for Marseille, much of it architectural. The new Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (MuCEM), right on the waterfront, will be the first national French museum outside Paris.
French international broadcaster RFI and its Arabic-language service Monte Carlo Doualiya will participate, offering a dual-language local FM station. With a temporary license France International Méditerranée (FIM) will broadcast several hours a day in French and Arabic. The station will be anchored at the MuCEM when it opens in June. This will be a first for Monte Carlo Doualiya, which uses FM and medium wave transmitters in the Middle East and North Africa but none in France. “Anchoring RFI and Monte Carlo Doualiya in Marseille offers the two channels greater proximity to the city and a better ability to reflect Marseille in their broadcasts,” said a joint statement. The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
