Regional Czech radio stations under the Kiss brand name will devolve into a single national brand. Czech media regulator Council for Radio and Television Broadcasting RRTV approved a request by owner Radio United Broadcasting, reports mediaguru.cz (April 6). The new status has immediate effect.
The RRTV also amended speech content quotas, from a fixed 10% requirement to a loose 6% to 14%. "This suggested percent range reflects recent listener surveys and the proposed amendment does not change the basic program specifications,” said an RRTV statement. Music content will coalesce around the concept of “Millennial Hits” - ’90’s pop oldies. The Kiss program will originate centrally in Prague from the Kiss 98 studios and is expected in place in early May. The new slogan is “be happy” - in English.
Radio United Broadcasting owns Kiss 98 (Prague), Kiss Proton (Plzen), Kiss Publikum (Zlin), Kiss Morava (Ostrava), Kiss Delta (Central Bohemia), and Kiss Jizni Cechy (South Bohemia). The re-branding of Kiss Hady (Brno) will require another RRTV decision, which is expected. Radio United also owns Country Radio, Radio Impuls, Radio Beat, Radio 1 and others. The Kiss radio brand first appeared in the Czech Republic with Prague local station Kiss 98 in 1992, owned by Irish broadcaster Communicorp in the first wave of foreign broadcasting ownership in Eastern Europe. Aside from the name, Kiss 98 was similar in design to Communicorp’s Dublin station 98 FM. Communicorp exited the Czech assets in 2012.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
