Real listeners get access to favorite channel, borders or not
nothing to do with Brexit

After a month-long pause for antenna and transmitter maintenance Ireland’s public radio longwave channel RTE 252 LW is back up and running. Five years ago RTE announced intention to retire the longwave platform which carried main general interest channel Radio 1 since 2004. Previously the frequency was used by Atlantic 252, a RTE/RTL Group joint venture that operated until 2001.

Longwave is an analogue radio platform and with the digital drum beating loudly RTE and many other legacy broadcasters saw it and other analogue platforms as too expensive to maintain. RTE closed its MW/AM transmission of Radio 1 in 2008. But RTE 252 LW had - and has - a vocal following who pushed for a stay of execution. Among those were Radio 1 listeners in Northern Ireland, part of the UK, with no access to Radio 1 via FM or DAB as UK rules require radio broadcasters to be UK based.

After listeners far and wide threw a fit about 252 LW closing, RTE put that idea on hold. That was 2016 with some maintenance ordered to keep it on the air for a couple of years. That deadline arrived this past May and RTE scrapped the plan to scrap 252 LW. Still, the station had to go off the air for a month to fix things up. RTE Radio 1 on 252 LW can be heard across most of the UK, pleasing a certain set of Irish expats.
