ftm Radio Page - week ending September 16, 2022
Not all media authorities search high and low for ways to simplify life for radio broadcasters. It is far more common for operators to be squeezed by employment rules, content priorities and, of course, higher fees. Squeals from broadcasters are rarely noticed.
But the Swiss Federal Council has a new plan, announced this week (September 16). There are, roughly, three categories of private radio broadcasting concessions in Switzerland. Some concession holders receive financial support from the broadcasting license fee. These largely small, local broadcasters sign a contract and adhere to conditions, typically for program performance. Then there are broadcasters, typically more prosperous, that do not receive financial support but have “privileged access” to spectrum space without few contractual obligations. Lastly, there are the “others” that simply register with regulator OFCOM/BAKOM. More often than not, these are DAB+ only broadcasters.
Enough, said the Federal Council. From 2025 those private radio concession holders not receiving financial support will merely send the regulator a “hello” letter and nothing more. Apparently, but not quite clear, these concession holders may never deal with renewals or competing concession applicants, at least until 2034. At the same meeting, the Federal Council decided not to significantly review local radio or television coverage areas until 2034.
Media watchers always have a sharp eye out for the new and different. This is particularly true for those who peruse radio audience estimates, normally rather static. The same channels always top the lists because, as we know, radio listeners know what they like and like what they know.
Such it was with the release this week (September 15) of second quarter MA 2022 IP Audio estimates of online listening. Of course, it’s important: online listening is watched by German media buyers, always looking for what’s hot and what’s not. “Streaming sessions” were up 7%, year on year. What’s not to like? (See more about media in Germany here)
And so, German media watchers seized on impressive quarter to quarter “session” increases of Radio Bollerwagen. It is new to the top 20 list. A digital creation of ffn Media Group, Radio Bollerwagen is pitched as the “xtreme party music” channel and now ranks 16th. Unsurprisingly, it has been rising in the charts since coronavirus restrictions lifted. Then, too, the weather in Germany this past spring was quite warm.
The rest of the ma 2022 IP Audio III top 20 results were quite static, all the big name channels are there as they have been since MA last changed its methodology. Like all German audio channels, formerly known as radio, Radio Bollerwagen is available on each and every digital platform.
The least sexy part of the media business is the sales house. Everybody uses them, almost, but they don’t get the same attention as crazy DJs and wild promotions. Radio and publishing are often a strong fit when it comes to ad sales, particularly at the local level. Television advertising is typically sold nationally. Internet ads are birds of a very different feather.
Danish broadcaster/publisher Jysk Fynske Medier (JFM) is, according to its website, the second largest media house in Denmark. JFM owns four radio stations, including Copenhagen’s Classic FM, and is part-owner of R4dio, a talk station that replaced Radio24syv. It is also publisher of 15 regional daily newspapers and 63 local weekly free-sheets. JFM has grown steadily since its creation by merger in 2015. (See more about media in Denmark here)
This past week, the company announced it is acquiring Dansk Radio Reklame (DRR), ad sales house for local radio stations, in business since 2001. A big part of DRR’s business has been representing Bauer Media’s Danish radio stations, including national channels The Voice, Nova FM and POP FM. That will end when the transaction closes in early 2023. JFM intends to migrate its national ad sales to DRR.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
