Denmark’s planned shut-off of FM radio broadcasting by 2021 could be delayed until 2023 or later. Transport Minister Rasmus Prehn summoned Culture Minister Mette Bock to a consultation (June 11) in which he voiced concerns about disrupting key information sources for automobile drivers, reported Berlingske (June 11). Danish politicians are in the midst of broad negotiations on media regulation.
"I'm willing to discuss when it's the right time for an FM shutdown,” said Minister Boch following the meeting. “Should there be a majority against us turning off (FM), democracy is such that we would not make citizens swallow it. But I just think they should take a look at the price of not turning it off. Citizens would not get the multitude of radio broadcasting they otherwise would have had.” (See more about media in Denmark here)
The Danish motorists’ lobbying group FDM opposes FM shut-off based on costs of retrofitting vehicles with digital receivers, which they estimate at between DKK4 billion (€5.4 million) to DKK14 billion (€1.8 billion) “sent out of the country.” The group also charges that DAB+, the digital radio platform alternative, “has problems fulfilling features that are desirable for a car radio.” (See more about digital radio here)
Shutting down the FM radio broadcasting band has long been a goal of digital audio broadcasting (DAB) supporters. Several governments have supported this through regulation, generally with reaching a threshold of digital radio listening or digital receiver purchase. At the end of last year much of Norwegian FM broadcasting ended. Automobile owner and seller groups opposed FM shut-off in Norway to no avail.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
