Mature markets and radio secrets
amusing

Commercial radio is not even a generation old in much of Europe, barely twenty years. Yet in that time markets are quickly maturing, according to one national broadcaster. The secret is “good stations.”

“The Polish radio market is already very mature,” said RMF FM president Tadeusz Soltys to Wirtualnemedia.pl (February 24). RMF FM was launched in 1990 and is the leading national commercial radio broadcaster in Poland. It is owned by Bauer Media Group. (See Poland national radio audience graph here)

“In more mature markets…radio programming is often based on old truths and principles that have already been devalued today,” he continued. “We have good stations.” He noted that radio time spent listening in Poland is the second highest in Europe.

Music quotas set by law in Poland are of little concern. “Last year was very strong for Polish music,” said Soltys , noting that RMF FM was in voluntary compliance before the rules were set. “If you look back, however, it was not always so, so don’t rule out that in the future we may have trouble choosing great new songs for the audience.”

There’s also no problem going digital. “I think that digitization is no longer spoken of in the future tense, like science fiction,” he offered. ”It’s already happened. Radio on the internet, certainly digital, surprises no one and has a growing support.” (See more on digital radio here)

“In many countries there has already been investment aimed at digital terrestrial radio,” he explained. “The problem is a shameful secret. There’s no demand. Radio, newspapers, television, video on demand have been available on the internet for a long time. Once again someone is trying to be smarter than the listener.”

“This amuses me a little.” (JMH)
