Faced with all the hype and hubbub from the masters of the digital universe, the advertising people have, mostly, turned to big data, big numbers and all the boring nerdy stuff. Being creative is less important in the world of Facebook. It’s all about targeting, efficiency and programmatic buying. Well, almost…
Competition coming to public radio
“something different”
The Principality of Liechtenstein is known for many things; cleanliness, Alps, banks and low taxes. It is not known as a vibrant media hub. There are two newspapers, one radio station and one TV channel. A big change, relatively speaking, could be coming as a second radio station may appear by the end of the year.
Privately-owned television broadcaster 1FLTV is applying for a radio station license, according to station manager Peter Kölbel, quoted by Volksblatt (June 25). The Principality turned down this week, for a second time, offers from 1FLTV to buy public radio station Radio L. “We are obviously disappointed,” said Herr Kölbel. “In times of economizing the government spends one and a half million Swiss francs as year for a music station.”
Last year the Principality made known its interest in privatizing Radio L, originally privately owned but rescued from closure by the government in 2004. Four years later 1FLTV went on the air. “Radio L should not be afraid,” noted Herr Kölbel. “We want to do something different.”

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
