Media caught in endless cross-fire
Threats and fuel

Conflict infuses daily life in the Central African Republic like the current rainy season. Earlier this year UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon referred to the escalation in violence rising to “another, more disturbing magnitude.” The few reliable media outlets have become targets as information becomes tangled in the bitter ethnic conflict.

Swiss NGO Fondation Hirondelle has operated Radio Ndeke Luka in the Central African Republic for a decade broadcasting in French and local language Sango. Workers at the radio station receive “daily threats” from “unidentified persons,” reported the NGO this week. “When the MINUSCA (UN Mission in Central African Republic) is operational we hope there will be more awareness of the importance of protecting journalists,” said Fondation Hirondelle project managerJean-Luc Mootoosamy. For some, choosing sides becomes vital. “We receive fuel from the Seleka group and from residents,” said Bria community station Radio Baragabake spokesperson Narcisse Jobert to Deutsche Welle (May 15). “This is the only way we can go on the air.” Seleka is an alliance of Islamic rebel groups and provides security to Radio Baragbake.

French photojournalist Camille Lepage lost her life in May reporting on the sectarian violence in Central African Republic.

New apps tested for broadcast archives
people find everything

Digital innovation is, indeed, boundless. So many platforms and so much content offer just too many ideas in search of an audience. Austria’s public broadcaster ORF launched last week a beta version of its Radiothek (radio – library) app similar to its existing TVthek live stream video platform.

The ORF Radiothek (name is used in Germany by WDR) offers everything broadcast on news channel Ö1, hit music channel Ö3 and alternative channel FM4 for seven days. In addition the Ö3 Visual Radio app will is now available for smartphones, tables and smart TV. Perhaps as much as newspaper publishers, public broadcasters, at least those with robust funding, have sought to take advantage of deep archives. (See more about digital radio here)

“The success of our apps and ORF TVthek shows that the audience finds the ORF offerings on the new platforms and use them very much,” said ORF Director General Alexander Wrabetz in a presser. The beta test will last six weeks after which regulator approval is necessary. If that passes the new digital services will become permanent early next year.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
