Big radio operator gobbles up another company
buyers market

The radio subsidiary of German media house Bauer Media, Bauer Media Audio, is increasing its stable of assets in Finland, reported radio news portal radiomedia.fi (March 8). Bauer Media Audio is acquiring Mediatakojat, operator of national channels Kasari and Ysäri and local stations Radio Pori and Auran Aallot. The two companies have had a joint operating agreement since 2019. (See more about media in Finland here)

Mediatakojat Oy (RadioMedia) is privately owned by media investor Sampsa Jolma. Separately it operates a marketing communications company under the Jabadabaduu name. Both national channels are music oriented, launched last year; Karasi offering ‘80s music and Ysäri offering ‘90s tunes. (See more about mergers and acquisitions here)

“As the media field changed, now was the right time to integrate the existing channels into a larger entity, which will ensure the continuation and development of the channels we have established,” said Mr. Jolma in a statement. When the transaction is complete, the Mediatakojat stations will join with Bauer Media Finland national channels Radio Nova, Suomi Rock, Iskelmä and Radio City. A year ago the group acquired Radio Classic. There is a marketing/sales agreement between Bauer Media Audio and NRJ Group - NRJ and Nostalgie brands in Finland. Earlier this month Bauer Media Audio acquired Ireland’s largest privately owned radio broadcaster Communicorp.

Former show host grouses that time passes
very far away

In a great many radio markets high profile show hosts never fade away They just move from channel to channel, sometimes to TV then back to radio. It’s particularly true of those who occupy the morning seats. Managers, however, come and go. There is a certain logic to this.

French national radio channel RMC has been around in various forms since the 1940’s, originally Radio Monte Carlo. Just over two decades ago - 2000 - it was taken over by former NRJ executives, including Alain Weill, and shortly struck out on a new path. It would be news, business and sports channel. That lasted a couple of years until it settled into news. talkshows and sports.

Through most of those years the morning show host was Jean-Jacques Bourdin. His act, as they say, incorporated quick interviews with a heavy dose of populism, very consistent with the channel’s image. By 2020, just short of 20 years with the radio channel, he moved to a 30 minute show on BFM TV, also owned by Altice. It didn’t last long. (See more about media in France here)

RMC has been fading in the national Médiamétrie audience estimates over recent years; peaking at 3rd place in 2017, resting at 6th at the end of 2020. Last September Apolline de Malherbe moved to the RMC morning show. She had hosted several talkshows on BFM TV. In contrast to M Bourdin, she presents a far less populist face, unsurprising for a graduate of Sciences Po, the heart of the Paris establishment.

This past weekend M Bourdin, perhaps free from contractual agreements, took to the pages of Journal du Dimanche (March 7) for a review of RMC and his successor. “RMC has always been a popular radio station, close to the listener, far from the exclusive Parisian self. And I don't want her to get lost. This distance probably explains the current figures.” The station must, he said “return to its fundamentals.”

"We are all very angry with Bourdin,” said a RMC employee, anonymously, to Le Parisian (March 8). New general manager Karim Nedjari, fourth in four years, had no comment. Said Mme de Malherbe, “we always got along well. It was a time that already seems very far away.” As they say in showbiz: Elvis has left the stage.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
