ftm Radio Page - week ending September 11, 2020
No self-respecting Italian broadcaster wants to get in the crosshairs of the local football team. Even with all the caveats of the times - coronavirus and lockdowns - being the “official radio station” carries weight. But football club owners want more.
“You cannot be the official radio of Napoli, maybe a B team,” said Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis at a recent press conference, quoted by Italian business news portal Calcio e Finanza (September 7). He was claiming that Radio Kiss Kiss was not “up to the level” of the football team. He seems to be complaining about coverage. “Why can’t I talk to the Napoli fan who lives in Milan or Bologna?” (See more about sports and media here)
Sr. De Laurentiis, locally known as ADL, has a flair for the dramatic. He is a film producer, son of a film producer and nephew of very famous film producer Dino De Laurentiis. ADL bought the Napoli football club in 2004. He is known for a rather explosive personality.
Not to be held back, Radio Kiss Kiss president Lucia Niespolo added her view shortly thereafter. “President Aurelio De Laurentiis seems to be confused and never misses an opportunity to express them in their chaos. The status of official radio does not imply that the latter should be considered available to Mr. De Laurentiis who, incidentally, certainly has the legal representation of the Napoli football company, but cannot claim to represent the city of Naples, nor - even more so - the millions of fans (as well as faithful radio listeners) around the world, who, moreover, are informed on a daily basis of the events of their favorites from the frequencies of Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, via web or via streaming.” (See more about media in Italy here)
Radio Kiss Kiss Italia is a national radio network based in Naples. It has been on the air since 1976, principally owned by the Niespolo family. It ranked 3rd nationally in the TER radio audience estimates for the second half 2019. Sra. Niespolo is the current president. Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli has been the official radio station of the Napoli football club for five years.
In his remarks, Sr. De Laurentiis announced he wants to “turn on a web radio.” Many sports franchise holders have begun self-produced radio and TV networks, nearly all online. It’s a trend. Broadcasters, too, have approached sports clubs with demands for cuts to rights fees as sponsorship and advertising revenues shrink.
Adoption of the DAB+ digital radio platform continues to progress, mostly among regulators and receiver manufacturers but also broadcasters and< listeners. Shutting down FM and other analogue platforms, a long held goal of DAB supporters, is moving more slowly; Norwegian authorities cleared the airwaves for DAB last year and Swiss authorities have promised to darken the analogue transmitters starting in 2022. It is a bit odd, then, for a regulator to shutdown DAB. Only Finland, Lithuania Latvia and Portugal have done so while Sweden has put digital radio transition on hold, citing the experience from neighboring Norway.
But Hungarian media regulator NMHH has done just that. This past weekend the DAB+ multiplex in Budapest, the only one in Hungary, powered down, reported media news portal media1.hu (September 6). The official reason is the contract between NMHH and transmission supplier Antenna Hungaria expired and was not renewed, low demand for digital radio cited. Stations now without DAB+ coverage in Budapest include privately owned Klubrádió and InfoRádió, four state radio channel and religious station Hungarian Catholic Radio. Officially, the Budapest DAB+ multiplex was but an “experiment” that lasted ten years. (See more about media in Hungary here)
Being Hungary, other issues have been proposed. Unlike FM licenses that are acquired, typically, by one owner/operator, the DAB+ multiplex is licensed and its operator, in this case state agency Antenna Hungaria, can lease to any broadcaster paying the fee. Licensing rules applicable to FM stations do not apply to DAB+ multiplex users; the NMHH can’t revoke a DAB+ channel. This is common almost everywhere and is seen as an advantage for DAB+ operators to change or modify programs as they see fit. (See more about digital radio here)
More generously it has been suggested that the NMHH, all members are right-wing Fidesz party appointees, have no interest in digital radio. And, too, it is possible that the NMHH has little interest in radio generally. When the FM license of Music FM was not renewed 18 months ago the NMHH took no action, leaving a dark - once high-powered - FM allocation.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
