Politicians stumble again with radio project
"the idea is good"

Denmark’s Culture Ministry awarded a national digital radio (DAB) concession to Radio Loud last autumn following the collapse of Radio24syv. Radio Loud has been designed as a publicly funded “culture channel” for young people 15 to 32 years, mostly speech-based, separate from Denmark’s public broadcaster DR. The launch of Radio Loud was fixed for April 1st.

Shortly after the DAB channel took to the airwaves, audience measurement from Kantar Gallup found too few listeners to mention. Actually, the Kantar Gallup panel found none, even after urgently reviewing the raw data. Two weeks later there were 15 thousand listeners estimated, the vast majority over 50 years. Audience estimates being what they are, even with an electronic measurement system, reading too much into the initial results would be ill advised. After all, nobody in their right mind buys serial number 001 of anything.

Radio Loud is the most recent attempt by Danish politicians to wean the public from pubic broadcaster DR, seen as too big and far too independent. The earlier attempt, Radio24syv, was government funded and operated by publisher Berlingske Media and PeopleGroup. It took to the airwaves in 2011 on the FM band with a news-talk program. A decent sized audience arrived as well as critical acclaim. (See more about media in Denmark here)

None of that was good enough for the far-right nativist Danish People’s Party (Dansk Folkeparti - DF) which demanded a majority of the staff work from Jutland, a considerable distance from Copenhagen. More political wrangling took place in early 2019 over the FM licenses and funding. Eventually, Berlingske Media and PeopleGroup gave up. Radio24syv left the airwaves at the end of October last year.

“Obviously, others should also think the channel is good,” said DF media spokesperson Pernille Bendixen to journalisten.dk (April 20). “And it is perhaps the older ones who are into DAB. But one would think that young people could attract other young people. They must have common interests. So I think the idea is good.”

When it's time for change, crowdfunding arrives
"We don't know what's next"

This may not be the best time to start-up a radio station from scratch. Undeterred, several former employees of Polish state radio are doing just that, reports wirtualnemedia.pl (April 20). Start-up financing for the proposed new online radio station - Radio Nowy Swiat (New World Radio) - is a crowdfunding project.

Several of the founders once worked for Polskie Radio channel Trojka, including former director Magdalena Jethon. Some were members of the Save Trojka group, established when the channel underwent turmoil a few years ago. Others are inspired friends.

Over several years Radio Trojka developed into a center for the alternative music and arts scene in Poland. It developed a considerable following. After parliamentary elections in 2015 brought in new management at Polskie Radio the channel was realigned to accommodate the political views of the right-wing nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party. It became a revolving door with staff and high profile show hosts departing. Audience share dropped considerably. (See more about media in Poland here)

A longtime radio figure in Poland, Ms Jethon was appointed director of Polskie Radio in early 2009 only to be dismissed by the end of the year. After a 10 month radio staff protest she was re-appointed in November 2010. In January 2016 she left Polskie Radio “by mutual agreement.” She subsequently published a book about those radio adventures.

By Monday (April 20) the group had raised PLN 400,000 (about €88,500) from 14 thousand individuals. They intend to equip a new facility and begin broadcasting by summer. “We don’t know what’s next,” said Ms Jethon.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
