Listeners Flock To Top Brands, The Rest Left Behind
messy Sitting on the edge of the chairs is not a comfortable position. Working from home, however, gives some media executives a more comfortable seat on the living room couch. When the research person - or sales manager - phones nerves are still jangled. And the calls are inescapable.

Radio listening continues, measurement does not
lapse in field work

Periodic snapshots of peoples’ media behavior generally succeed in focusing attention. Charting the winners and losers appeals to most all media watchers. Datasets, particularly those of robust origin, can effectively illustrate the chosen narrative. Media buyers pour over the numbers. How better to negotiate, yes? Interrupting the flow can cause panic… or relief.

Initial radio audience estimates for 2020 were released this week by Spain’s Association for Media Research (Asociación para la Investigación de Medios de Comunicación - AIMC). It was part of the thrice-annual General Media Study (EGM) measuring all media behavior. AIMC is the joint industry organization comprising broadcasters, publishers and, of course, media buyers. The period of the radio listening measurement (OLE I 2020) was January 8th through March 17th.

Compared with the like-period from 2019, radio listening to national and regional channels dropped slightly. This is a long term trend. On aggregate, general interest channels, known for sports shows, gained while music-only channels did not. (See more about media in Spain here)

Nothing changed year on year in the top seven rankings. Cadena SER remains on top, 29.1% share from 28.2%. Cadena COPE followed, slightly off. Then legacy pop music channel Los 40 Principales placed 3rd, share up significantly. All of the next four in the rankings posted lower share, national public all-talk channel RNE, 7th, hit the hardest, falling to 8.1% share from 9.9%.

Beneath the top rated, Los 40 Classic jumped to 4.6% share from 3.1%, one year on. Madrid-based talk channel esRadio, with plenty of sports, rose to 4.3% share from 3.4%. Regional public channel Radio Galega also showed significant gains.

Data for the EGM radio audience estimates are collected from face-to-face interviews. This is a problem. Spain is in coronavirus lockdown. Reporting of the OLE I radio data was delayed a week. The next phase due to commence this month has been suspended entirely due to “inability to carry out field work.” The researchers are planning for data collection to resume in September for November release. It will be a fortuitous break as radio ad revenues have dropped 80%, reported media portal Dircomfidencial (April 7).
