Spirits lifted with extraordinary broadcast
solidarity

In a show of national unity every Italian radio channel on every platform broadcast the national anthem simultaneously at 11:00 local time Friday. In addition to Inno di Mameli three other very well-known Italian songs were broadcast and streamed live - Azzurro, La Canzone Del Sole and Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu (Volare). After the broadcast ships of the Italian navy at seven bases blew horns and rang bells.

Italy is locked down due to the most serious coronavirus outbreak in Europe. Respecting the restrictions to movement, as much as possible, Italians placed radios on their balconies to share the presentation, noted daily Il Messaggero (March 20). Public and private, national and local broadcasters as well as Vatican Radio participated. (See more about media in Italy here)

A week ago (March 12) a video went viral of Siena residents serenading their neighbors with songs from their balconies. It was viewed more than 600,000 times. Singers and musicians from across Italy offered renditions of favorite tunes. But the radio broadcast this week was a true first.

Sagging ad spending forces drastic changes to new channels
"There will be better times"

Citing an abrupt drop in advertising revenues, the Danish NRJ and MTV Radio franchises are doing without DJs, reported Danish daily Ekstra Bladet (March 18). “Unfortunately, this is true,” said co-owner Phillip Lundsgaard. “We hope there will be better times so that we can hire them all again in a year and a half.”

The stations are now non-stop music, plus ads. Danish commercial radio broadcasters have reported sagging ad sales as retail clients put spending on hold. Danish authorities were among the first to order strict social distancing in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Radio NRJ gained national distribution on the Terecom DAB+ multiplex last April after operating as a local Copenhagen station, licensed through NRJ Group. MTV Radio came along last August, licensed through Viacom as the first MTV branded radio station. It, too, operated on the national DAB+ multiplex. (See more about media in Denmark here)

Every business manager watches the budget carefully. Proprietors insist on robust cost control. For radio broadcasters this means tight reins on staffing. DJs and show hosts, even those with great ratings, are expendable.

Everything closed, even the strike called off
"exceptional conditions"

French union collective CGT (General Confederation of Labor) agreed to suspend resumption of industrial action against public broadcaster Radio France, said its statement (March 13). It cited “exceptional conditions” at Radio France related to the coronavirus outbreak. For its part Radio France agreed to suspend critical negotiations scheduled to end March 20th on job and budget cuts.

A day earlier union members returned to the barricades, briefly, calling for an “indefinite strike.” Radio France output was “slightly disrupted,” said Le Monde (March 12). This new “interruption” will last 15 days and can be extended “as the situation requires.” The CGT represents almost all Radio France employees, including reporters and editors. (See more about media in France here)

The previous interruption began February 3rd after 63 days of industrial action. Radio France director general Sibyle Veil had directed “voluntary departures” as part of a restructuring plan. “Several of our branches experienced disturbances linked to a new strike movement,” she said in a statement quoted by AFP (March 12). “In the current circumstances which are exceptional, I appeal to the responsibility of each and everyone. We must respond present and do everything to ensure the continuity of our missions.”

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
