A group of journalists working for Romania’s public radio broadcaster SRR
(Societatii Române de Radiodifuziune) have blasted their employer for "waste, forbearance and incompetence with public money,” reported news portal hotnews.ro (November 1). The group has several reforms in their sights; gender pay gap, fewer management positions, more independent program commissions. The main complaint is that Romania’s public radio broadcaster is stuck in the 1990’s.
Asociatia Kompatibil, literally Compatible Association, was founded by SRR employees after a court declared now former president/general director Ovidiu Micelescu “incompatible” for the position. Finally, he was replaced by Ovidiu Miculescu, a political appointee. The group’s stated purpose is “to promote and respect the criteria of integrity and professionalism, especially in radio.” (See more about media in Romania here)
Their message comes as SRR, figuratively at least, reached its 91st anniversary, founded in 1928. Radio Romania has traversed several organizational charts during those years; adopting television, then separating, readopting and separating again. And there have been years of political complications during which it was a state radio broadcaster. But it was adopted within the public broadcasting fold and, despite periodic funding crises, has managed to hang on. National audience estimates for the five SRR channels have maintained relative stability, though main news/talk channel Radio România Actualitati has drifted lower nationally and in the capital Bucharest. German radio stations have avoided, largely, wholesale licensing reviews for decades. Regulators have had other concerns, occasionally digital transition, and operators generally follow all the rules. It is, clearly, Germany.
This week the media regulator overseeing privately owned broadcasting in the Hamburg city-state is set to announce results of a review of radio broadcasters. This could result in new FM license holders and the departure of others. The regulator, Medienanstalt Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein (MA HSH), announced the review earlier this year to insure all broadcasters offer the conventional and accepted “widest possible diversity of opinion” and “comprehensive coverage of cultural and political events.”
The last license whole-market license review was conducted in 1991. All that understood, the MA HSH, which regulates private-sector broadcasting in both the Hamburg city-state and the Schleswig-Holstein federal state, cannot, due to agreements, further increase the number of FM allocations. (See more about media in Germany here)
Five radio broadcasters are affected: Radio Hamburg, Energy Hamburg, Rock Antenne Hamburg, 917XFM and Hamburg 2. Most are joint ventures of big broadcasting and publishing groups, some rather intermingled. There are at least three new applications. “Radio stations are considered in the media industry as extremely high-yield and relatively resilient,” noted media portal meedia.de (November 4).

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
