Media Rising Above Where Needs Are Greatest
Radio Okapi on air There are places where media carries the weight of life and survival, far more than celebrity gossip and playing the hits. Those who pursue this mission see, hear and feel the difference. It’s not something that can be valued simply in terms of money. That’s what makes it so difficult.

More spots, less money
Call the sales manager!

Six national radio channels in Slovakia broadcast more than 272, 000 commercial ads in 2011, according to TNS Slovakia (February 27), a 2% increase. “Despite the decline in ad spending,” said the report, “monitoring shows an increase in the amount of advertising space sold.”

Oldies music channel Radio Viva had the most spots among the six channels, 29%. Europa 2 had the biggest increase over 2010, 21%. Other channels showed slight decreases in the number of spots on the air.

The most ads broadcast, according to the monitor, were broadcast on December 9th, a total of 1461 units. The longest spot break was on Fun Radio December 1st, 15 units for nearly six and a half minutes.

The TNS Slovakia monitor also calculated revenue estimates based on the number of ads and published rates. Radio Express, according to that calculation, is the market revenue leader. (JMH)

Radio listening not hampered by internet
“persistently high importance”

Top line radio listening figures for the second half 2011 in Germany (Radio MA 2012 I) “may seem at first glance rather unspectacular,” said measurement institute AG.MA CEO/Radio Dieter Müller, in a press statement (February 29). Gross daily reach rose slightly to 79.6% and daily time spent listening for persons age 10 and older held steady at 199 minutes.

Listening by young people age 10 to 29 years, however, rose to 145 minutes from 136 minutes two years on. Gross reach in the youthful age group was up to 71.5% from 70.1% showing “clearly that radio has a persistently high importance for people in the Internet age,” observed Herr Müller, “This is especially true for young audiences.” (See more on media in Germany here)

They seem to be listening
Details missing

Top line Hungarian national radio audience figures for January indicate 73.3% of the 15 years plus population tuning in at least 15 minutes a day. Average time spent listening was four hours and 14 minutes. Details and comparative data from Ipsos Skonto/GfK continues to be unavailable. (See more on media in Hungary here)

National commercial channels Class FM and Neo FM are nearly tied for market leader with State channel Radio 1 lagging. According to available information radio listening was up in late morning and early afternoon hours.

Ipsos Skonto stopped public release of radio audience data after the controversial license renewal denial of the previous national commercial radio channels in 2009. (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
