Streaming services penetrating the radio space, says support group
podcasts ready to download

The arrival of digital audio services was never exactly welcomed by radio broadcasters. The multitude of streaming platforms offering zillions of musical combinations eventually cut deeply into all-music radio broadcasting. To a great extent, none of that seeped into the advertising business as broadcasters were able to keep broadcast and streaming measurement separate from the watchful eyes of media buyers. That plan was upended by subscription services collecting even more beautiful data.

German private media association Vaunet has come out in favor of insuring broadcasting and audio remain separate. The group has several specific proposals beginning with limiting “online commercial audio activities,” said a statement from the group’s radio and audio chairman Marco Maier (January 17). As usual, there were more complaints about German public broadcasters “increasingly penetrating market segments in which private media providers are already successfully present,” referring to a trend toward more local program orientation. “State broadcasters seem to be able to expand unimpeded.” (See more about media in Germany here)

The present fear is a potential change in the State Treaty for private broadcasters that might - it’s only in the discussion stage - increase ”flexibility” for television program commissioning and video-on-demand. If those provisions were to be extended to radio and audio, said the group, “the lost costs for terrestrial transmissions could be reallocated to program investment.” In other words, if public broadcasters were allowed to expand to local program via online platforms (i.e. cheaper) they would have more money to spend on programming. By coincidence (winkie blinkie) streaming audio platform Deezer and German public broadcasting umbrella organization ARD announced “cooperation.” Deezer will offer 400 podcasts produced by nine regional public broadcasters ready for free download. "The ARD podcasts cover a wide variety of topics, from reports to news, comedy and entertainment,” said Deezer spokesperson Jessica Goesken, quoted by media/makreting portal W&V (January 18). “We are very pleased that our listeners can now be able to stream a larger selection of popular ARD productions on Deezer."

Survey Reveals Story Ready To Be Told
wake up glub glub It seems, quite often, that professional media watchers wait to pounce until they have numbers in their hot hands. General observations oft repeated only find salience when a dataset or survey can be attached. Of course, there’s one big reason: editors. This special tribe watching over the watchers has no patience with whiners, particularly when conventional wisdom is challenged. But with numbers in hand comes the onslaught.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
