UK media regulator Ofcom has granted Radio Caroline a power increase, noted Radio Today (August 3). That would be a power increase on its 648 kHz AM/MW frequency. The station has been using that platform under a community radio license since late 2017 with 1,000 watts of power.
Radio fans will recall that Radio Caroline was one of the original pirate radio channels operating in the North Sea in the 1960’s. Once it operated from a boat, several actually. The original Mi Amigo boat sank in 1980. For years the boats were regularly raided by British and Dutch maritime authorities. The legend rang on. There was a movie.
The current Radio Caroline operated on streaming platforms for a few years, then FM and DAB+ serving Kent and other part of Southeast England. Ofcom decided Radio Caroline serves “a community of interest” rather than a specific geographic area and a power increase would help overcome man-made urban noise. “The studio location means that the station attracts and engages volunteers from both the existing and extended coverage areas, said the Ofcom statement. “The power increase will therefore improve signal in the extended coverage area, where some of the station’s volunteers live and work.” (See more about media in the UK here)
The metrics of the power increase have not been disclosed, perhaps not yet determined. The 648 kHz frequency had been abandoned by BBC World Service in 2011. The omni-direction antenna at the Orfordness site is authorized to 250 kilowatts.
Broadcasting anniversaries are noted occasionally, giving momentary pause from the whistle and buzz of digital fare. Those with a certain tenure with the medium are bound to reflect when memory cells are jogged. Millennials have no time for events in which they are not centered. GenZers are generally challenged by speech, a shared brain-space with memory.
One hundred years ago, August 5, 1921, the first US major league baseball game was broadcast on radio. The Pittsburgh Pirates played the Philadelphia Phillies. It was broadcast on Pittsburgh radio station KDKA, a 50,000 watt flamethrower on AM/MW 1020 kHz. The station was owned by the Westinghouse Company, an electrical device manufacturer. Broadcast operations were financed through receiver sales. Westinghouse also produced transmitters. (See more about radio audience here)
Detroit, Michigan station WWJ also claims the first baseball broadcast. Early broadcast historian Cynthia Boyes Young (1960) found that details were “not recorded at the time.” Broadcast licenses were not issued until later in 1921. There was no advertising. It is true that early baseball broadcasts were constructed by staff announcers from wire service copy. But KDKA engineer Harold Arlin was the first to “deliver” live play-by-play from the ballpark, Forbes Field. Mr. Arlin was “the best known American voice in Europe,” wrote the Times of London (January 1926), noted History Com (August 5), as the KDKA signal blasted across the Atlantic.
Also this week is the 40th anniversary of MTV’s launch, notable for its lasting impact on radio broadcasting. Broadcasting music video clips had rattled around for several years. A group of NBC radio programmers and producers with strong relationships with the music business pitched the concept of a dedicated music video channel to Warner Cable. MTV was born August 1, 1981. A video of pop hit “Video Killed The Radio Star” launched MTV that day.
The worldwide success of MTV spawned dozens of spin-off and competitors worldwide. For the music business it was a bonanza. Now the channel, owned by ViacomCBS, runs a mix of reality shows and music videos. It has been eclipsed by video streaming portals like YouTube, Daily Motion, Vimeo, Deezer; the list goes no forever.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
