Radio struggled in the pandemic year, private stations most hit
another win for public channels

Radio reach in Austria dipped slightly over the last year, according to the RadioTest audience estimates for the July 2020 to July 2021 period, released this week (July 29). National daily reach during the period was 75.6% of persons 10 years and older, Monday to Sunday. Among persons 14 to 49 years total daily reach was 70.0%.

For public broadcaster ORF aggregate daily reach was slightly lower at 61.4% from 62.2% in the like period one year on. ORF regional channels fell to 28.3% aggregate daily reach from 29.7%. In the national data, ORF youth channel Ö3 remained by far the top rated, 31.5% daily reach from 31.9%. News and information channel Ö1 gained, unsurprisingly with coronavirus circumstances, to 10.8% daily reach from 10.0%. Alternative public channel FM4 posted 3.4% daily reach, up from 3.2%. Private sector radio broadcasters saw a more significant drop to 26.4% daily reach from 27.3% year on year. National private channel KroneHit dropped to 9.0% daily reach from 9.6%. In February managing director Ernst Swodowa threatened to remove KroneHit from the RadioTest surveys. Talk and oldies channel Radio Austria, new since October 2019, did not do particularly well considering the publicity attracted by controversial personality Wolfgang Fellner, posting 1.5% daily reach, down from 1.8%.

In the Vienna survey area, ORF radio channels performed better on aggregate, 48.5% daily reach, up from 47.9% one year on. Ö1 was up significantly, 13.9% from 12.3%. Public regional channel Radio Wien posted 12.2%, up slightly. FM4 was also up, 4.4% from 4.0%. The exception was Ö3, lower at 20.6% daily reach from 21.5%. Regional public channel Radio Niederösterreich (NÖ), which serves Lower Austria state, drew 6.2% daily reach in Vienna, up from 5.6%.

Private pop hit channel Radio 88.6, which broadcasts to Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland on FM and nationally on DAB+, posted 5.8% daily reach, up from 5.3%. Most other private radio channels were lower in Vienna. KroneHit dropped to 8.0% daily reach from 8.5%. Radio Energy and Radio Arabella were also lower.

The RadioTest audience measure measurement is produced by GfK Austria with data collected from live interviews. Herr Dr. Swoboda is still not happy. “We must not overlook the fact that an ever-increasing group of young people in particular with relatively high audio usage can no longer be reached with telephone interviews,” he said to German radio portal Radioszene (July 29).

Lockdowns and rain clutter city radio audience
let's move on

Interesting is probably the best term to describe the April-June Il de France (IDF) (Greater Paris) radio audience estimates from France measurement institute Médiamétrie. That would be interesting as in now move on. Considering the coronavirus lockdowns, the weather and the football radio listeners seemed to have done what they’ve been doing through much of the last year - stick with favorite channels or give them up.

Public broadcaster Radio France main national news and information channels France Inter remains top rated. This has not changed in two years, though market share has rattled around. With this survey France Inter has a 15.4% audience share. Data was not collected during the same period in 2020. (See more about media in France here)

Major commercial competitor RTL remains number 2 in the IDF, 12.0% audience share, trickling downward. Specialty news/talk channel RMC placed third, 7.2% audience share. They seem to have regained some of their footing in recent months after on-air personnel changes. Public all-news channel France Info is in 4th position, 6.2% audience hare, slightly lower than the average of the last two periods but better than earlier data. Europe 1 placed 5th with 5,4% audience share, making the 7.5% share in January-March look like an outlier. (See Greater Paris radio audience share trend chart here)

Being the Greater Paris audience Radio Classique placed 6th, 4.3% audience share, bouncing around over the last year like most others. Next is national hit music channel NRJ with 3.9% audience share, tracking higher in recent periods. Regional public channel FIP placed 8th with 3.8% audience share, definitely tracking higher. Skyrock and Nostalgie took the next to places in the top ten.

With the exception on FIP local stations fared poorly. Another exception is Oui FM with 1.8% audience share. Once the top rated local Paris station Radio Latina struggled with 1.0% audience share.
