Winners and losers in radio license competition
“real danger”
Slovakia’s Radio Viva lost its national / multi-regional radio license in a decision by regulator Broadcasting and Retransmission Council (RVR) at the end of its license term. Four applicants had come forward, said the RVR, but three dropped out leaving Slovak real estate company Corporate Legal the winner. Radio Viva will surrender its frequencies at the end of 2013. The new station will be called Inforadio.
“The Council noted a good project and good preparation,” said RVR president Milos MistrÌk at a press conference (May 15), who noted the new channel will largely be a news-talk station. Radio Viva management called the license decision a “fraud” at their own press conference (May 17).
Other Slovak broadcasters took the decision in stride, noting that Fun Radio’s license was renewed for another eight years. “The real danger is that if council members decide to terminate a radio license despite doing nothing wrong,” said Radio Expres general manager Eva Babitzova, quoted by ekonomika.sme.sk (May 16). “Functioning stations should not enter into new competitions.” The Radio Expres license was recently renewed. Ms Babitzova, who deferred comment about Radio Viva’s plight, is also the director of the Association of Independent Radio and Television Stations (ANRTS).
In the January-March Median SK national radio audience survey Radio Viva posted a 6.3% market share for seventh place. Radio Expres placed first with 21.7% market share followed by Slovak public radio (19.5%) and Fun Radio (12.1%). The RVR also renewed the Fun Radio license for eight years. Radio Viva launched in 2006 on the ashes of commercial channel Radio Twist. (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
