Internet radio shows up
Careful, careful…

New audience research for the Ukraine capital Kiev has been released by new supplier GfK, reports Telekritika (March 29) for the survey period January through March. Obviously they cut off a week, but never mind. The big news is that radio listening via the internet exceeded 20%.

Overall, about 57% of Kiev residents were listening to radio, a bit below the European average, but average time spent listening was 4 hours and 37 minutes.

The previous survey, conducted by TNS with a different methodology, showed 88% “definitely not” listening to radio via the internet, the interpretation possibly being that maybe 12% might have been listening to Web radio. Who knows? Another difference between the present and previous surveys is that now radio listening in Kiev is measured separately rather than a sub-set of all Ukraine listening. (JMH)

Radio domain name bidding battle
The greater brand manager

Applications are due April 12th for a slew of new generic top level domain names (gTLDs) and would-be registrars are getting their ducks (read: cash) in line. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced (March 29) it will be bidding for .radio and .eurovision. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), part of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), administers just about everything to do with the internet domain name system and is opening it up to all sorts of new branding opportunities.

“The EBU's acquisition of this TLD will serve a greater good, bringing tangible benefits to radio broadcasters and listeners everywhere,” said EBU President Jean-Paul Philippot in a statement. “Our application includes the firm, written support of the EBU's seven sister unions, representing the interests of around 50,000 radio stations with a potential reach of some 5.5 billion listeners.” The EBU and its bid partners are, generally, support groups for public and State broadcasters. (See EBU statement here)

One other bidder for .radio is US-based BRS Media, which administers the country-level domain names .AM and .FM. “We always felt that our knowledge of the on-air and online radio marketplace, backed with 15 years of real registry experience provides us with a much better understanding in managing, marketing and operating an industry specific top-level domain, like .radio,” said CEO George Bundy, quoted by donainincite.com (March 29).

“It would be regrettable if (the .radio gTLD) fell into hands that do not represent the entire radio community,” added EBU Director General Ingrid Deltenre. The approved registrar for the .radio domain name, presumably, will be able to control usage similar to the air transport industry’s administration of the .aero gTLD and, of course, collect a fee. Radio highly regarded
more than the army

In its semi-annual survey of attitudes toward Czech institutions public opinion research institute CVVM found radio most trusted, reports Tyden.cz (March 29). Nearly two-thirds of those surveyed (65%) trust radio “definitely” or “mostly”, topping the list.

Television is highly trusted by 57%, one point lower than the army, which ranked second. Print media, 50% trust, ranked below the police at 5th. Last year the same survey found trust for radio at 67%, TV at 62% and print media at 53%. Margin of error for the 1,053 person survey taken March 5th through 12th was not reported. (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
